February  2012

An intrepid group of amputees are attempting an ascent of Mount Toubkal in the Moroccan High Atlas Mountains. In September 2010. This same group completed an ascent of Kilimanjaro. None of the amputees that climbed Kili, including myself, had any previous experience of an adventure on this scale. We faced challenges that were diverse, expected and also surprising. Despite the rigours of the trek, the altitude, and conditions wearing down prosthetic components and human users alike, a large proportion of those that set out made it to the summit.
We decided to increase the technicality of our next challenge and intend to tackle Mount Toubkal in the winter conditions found in February. The snow and ice present at this time of year will demand the use of crampons and an ice axe – items that none of us amputees taking part have used before.

14th/24th – Hike Kilimanjaro Trek

On 14th October 2010 a team of civilian amputees will embark on the challenge of a lifetime, as they overcome their own personal limitations and begin this expedition to reach the summit of the World’s tallest free standing mountain, Kilimanjaro, The Roof of Africa! Our team of amputees and healthcare professionals will push the boundaries in order to raise money to enable new amputees to participate in sport to aid their rehabilitation. Our team will be supported by healthcare professionals including prosthetists, a physiotherapist, a doctor and a clinical scientist. This expedition sums up the ethos of LimbPower, which is amputees and other ambulant disabled people helping and inspiring newly disabled people to get back out into the world and see their disability as a challenge, not a barrier to life. Our team are an eclectic mix of individuals from different walks of life, with different levels of amputation and different experiences, but with one common goal to help other amputees on their journey to recovery.

April 2010

30th – A Night with the Stars – launch of LimbPower at BAFTA

The red carpet was laid out as the 120 guests entered The British Academy of Film & Television Arts , 195 Piccadilly, London  to enjoy a fun packed evening of entertainment, good food, wine and song; all in the name of raising funds for LimbPower. The launch of our charity was a phenomenal success with guest s   making an incredible effort to dress as icons of the silver screen, movies stars,  TV and cartoon characters. The event had a carnival atmosphere where smurfs, gladiators and superheroes danced the night away, while Homer and Marge Simpson played their hand at roulette  and black jack  alongside Captain Jack Sparrow and Batman.

The entertainers were second to none, with  Gypsy, a 5 piece live band  with  lead singer Kelly Richards and supported by  Charlotte Inglis ,  and a guest appearance from Saxaphonist James Herman together  with a medley of musicals by drama student Sarah  Dungworth . Tracey Jones, a belly dancing teacher and amputee gave an incredible demonstration and conducted lessons throughout the evening.   (www.liveyourspirit.com)
