Hike Kilimanjaro

On 14th October 2010 an international team of ambulant disabled people will embark on the challenge of a lifetime, as they overcome personal limitations and begin an exceptional expedition to reach the summit of the worlds tallest free-standing mountain, Kilimanjaro, the Roof of Africa!

At 5895m, Mt. Kilimanjaro is one of the largest volcanoes ever to break through the Earths crust. We will be taking the Rongai route, which starts just south of the Kenya-Tanzania border and has been mostly unused for many years. Experienced guides consider this ascent route to be both more manageable and more beautiful than the main Marangu trail. The team will set off in attractive farmland and delightful forests, with the possibility of viewing wildlife. They will pass through five unique climate zones, adding considerabl to the interest of the trek.
Our team of amputees, ambulant disabled and healthcare professionals will push the boundaries in order to raise money to enable new amputees to participate in sport to aid their rehabilitation. Our team, 50% of which are amputees will be supported by healthcare professionals including a Prosthetist, Physiotherapist, Doctor and Medical Engineer.

This challenging expedition sums up the ethos of LimbPower, which is for amputees and other ambulant disabled people to help and inspire newly disabled people to get back out into the world and see their disability as a challenge, not a barrier to living.

Our team is an eclectic mix of individuals from different walks of life, different levels of amputation and different experiences. But they all have one common goal, to help other amputees on their journey to recovery.
We will be raising money for the Amputee Games, created to utilise sport to aid the physical, social and psychological rehabilitation of amputees and other ambulant disabled people, specifically to give primary (new) amputees an opportunity to experience a wide variety of sports, taught by specialist from the individual sports governing bodies and associations,
with the additional benefit of meeting other amputees in a conducive environment, where they can share ideas and experiences with each other and more experienced amputees.
