Wheelchair Basketball

British Wheelchair Basketball

British Wheelchair Basketball (BWB) is the national governing body for wheelchair basketball within the UK. BWB aims to create, underpin and deliver quality opportunities for players at all level in all corners of the United Kingdom, in order to obtain the best possible performances for teams, clubs, and each and every member.

From juniors to adults, wheelchair basketball is a great activity for a diverse age group. It offers a great physical workout in a safe and welcoming social setting: it’s a great sport for life. Indeed, meeting new friends and discovering new places, wheelchair basketball is about more than what takes place on the court.

Initially a rehabilitation and recreational activity for patients with spinal cord injuries in the 1940s, wheelchair basketball quickly developed into a competitive sport with today over 100 teams playing across the UK.

What are my options to play

Wheelchair basketball embraces a wide range of disabilities including those with a lower limb physical impairment, cerebral palsy, and multiple sclerosis, to name just a few. You don’t need to be a wheelchair user to get involved within wheelchair basketball: non-disabled individuals are welcome to play and compete within the UK’s clubs and leagues – making it a great sport to play alongside family and friends.

What equipment do I need?

You do not need to have your own sports chair if you would like to play wheelchair basketball: your local club will be more than happy to provide you with one for their sessions. All you need is to wear suitable active wear and bring a drink.

What will it cost me?

On average it can cost from £2 - £5 per session, with many clubs offering the first session for free. Once you have settled in to the club there will also be additional membership fees for the year.

How do I get involved?

You can get involved by finding your local club at our website on our club finder: www.britishwheelchairbasketball.co.uk

Alternatively you can phone the office on 01509 279900 to speak a member of the team who will be able to provide you with the relevant information.

We advise that you contact the club to confirm the session details prior to attending.
