Canoeing

What is Canoeing?

Canoeing is a sport that can be enjoyed recreationally or competitively both on calm and rough waters. Canoeing involves using a single-bladed paddle to propel a boat that can be open (canoe) or closed (kayak). Canoeing can be done individually or in crews of 2, 4 or even 10 paddlers. Some boats are steered by a HELMSMAN who uses a paddle or a rudder, while others are steered by the paddlers themselves. Who can take part in Canoeing? Anyone can take part in canoeing; there are opportunities for people with almost any disability to be catered for. British Canoeing uses the term PADDLE-ABILITY to refer to all activity for disabled people, whether it is specialist or mainstream. Paddle-Ability focuses on a person's ability to take part in paddlesport rather than their disability.

Why take part in canoeing?

Canoeing can offer an array of physical and mental benefits. It's a great way to stay fit, get strong, learn new skills and build friendships. It can also create a great sense of freedom and adventure when you are on the water and it can be a great leveller for anyone with a disability; disabled participants often report feeling that they have overcome their challenges when they go out on the water. Ultimately, canoeing can be really fun and rewarding if you catch the bug... There is something thrilling about the way a canoe moves which can't be explained easily in words!
